Invasive
alien plants pose a direct threat not only to South Africa’s
biological diversity, but also to water security. They divert
enormous amounts of water away from productive uses affecting
many industries, recreational activities and supply of drinking
water. The fight against invasive alien plants is spearheaded
by the Working for Water program which clears waterways and
uplifts local communities. The program has benefited these
communities through job creation, implementation of HIV and
Aids projects and has, through its skills development and training
program, established sustainable local businesses that create
products from the leftover biomass. For more information please
